Learning a language is often a little daunting.
We think about the time it took us to learn our mother tongue, about the grammar and its inevitable traps, and about the great many number of words we need to memorise. We are afraid of and even feel guilty about making ‘mistakes’. We remember with some bitterness our teacher’s corrections in red ink pen. We are afraid of not understanding what someone is saying to us, of not being understood at all, of sounding ridiculous. We know that pronunciation can sometimes pose insurmountable difficulties. And yet, a language is something different from all this.
